Description: A striking example of aWorld War One & Two British Army Bandmaster's Cap Badge 1914 to 1945 With all military music the world over tracing its illustrious roots back to Turkey in the 14th century, European armies also relied heavily on fife & drummers to keep their columns in line & on the go, whilst on the battlefield, all commands & field orders were transmitted by company buglers. By the early 2oth century however basic military sounds and beats had begun to turn into more harmonious music as Regimental & Cavalry Bands were slowly formed (and revered) as armies began to recruit musicians from its ranks and from outside. During The two World Wars, military bandsmen continued to serve, with their musical output becoming more important as both troop entertainment and for, and on, formal parades. All British (and German) bandsmen were musically trained on their chosen instrument whilst also undergoing basic military training before then advancing to specialist training in a dual-role as combat medics, signallers, runners & military despatch riders, to enter this secondary career in times of war. Whilst many military musicians across all branches of the armed forces were however seen as musicians first-soldiers second, many did not hesitate to grab a rifle and go into combat when needed. Sadly being a musician did not save you from death in war as The Band of The Coldstream Guards found out when in World War Two on June 18th 1944, whilst performing at The Guards Chapel, Wellington Barracks, a German V-1 Flying Bomb came down and 120 people, including 5 Guardsmen musicians & their Director of Music Major Windham were tragically killed. A most impressive silver metal star-shaped badge featuring a brass Lyre at its centre under a King's Crown with twin split pin lugs on the rear. Measuring approx 2.25" from top to bottom and roughly 1.75" across at its widest, this is an absolutely cracking & complete example of a British Army Bandmasters' cap badge from both The Great War and World War Two.
