WALTER FORWARD - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/22/1842 - HFSID 291748 WALTER FORWARD Handwritten letter assuring a protg that "I shall be able to take care of you", despite "some persons unkindly disposed" who had maligned him to President Tyler. Autograph Letter signed: "W Forward", 1 page, 8x10. Washington, 1842 December 22. To Wolcott Huntington, Esq. In full: "Finding that some persons, unkindly disposed, had told the President a good many things to your prejudice, I had a fine conversation with him a few days since respecting you in which I communicated my opinion & feelings too without much reserve. The result was a conviction that you are in no danger. I think I shall be able to take care of you, and convinced as I am that you are capable and faithful, why should I not? With great regard, Yours truly". Walter Forward (1786-1852) was a US Representative from Pennsylvania (1822-1825) and a founder of the Whig Party. Appointed First Comptroller of the Treasury by President William Henry Harrison in 1841, he became Secretary of the Treasury after John Tyler succeeded to the Presidency. However, Forward's relations with the new President did not remain friendly. Tyler, chosen as the Whig vice presidential candidate to "balance the ticket," governed more as a Democrat than a Whig. "No traitor is viler than Tyler" became a Whig motto, and many members of the Party left the administration. Forward resigned on February 28, 1843. He later served as a diplomatic envoy in Denmark in the Whig administration of Zachary Taylor, and as a district court judge. The fate of Wolcott Huntington, probably the holder of a patronage appointment but soon to be deprived of Forward's protection, is unknown. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly creased.
