Valiant 12 Transistor HT-1221 or VRC-12 AM Radio 1963 Works Excellent Vintage

Description: Valiant 12 Transistor HT-1221 or VRC-12 AM Radio 1963 Serviced Works Excellent Vintage VTG Rare color: Maroon Made in Japan, by the components installed, and the presence of civil defense markings on its dial, I believe this is 1963. This radio came to me as many do with very low volume which is a classic symptom of open/shorted capacitors. I replaced its four capacitors which returned the radio to full performance. The battery connector showed signs of battery leakage, so I replaced it with a new connector. This radio is an exceptional performer. Since I had it apart, I can tell you what I learned: A good working radio will have six or eight transistors. This radio has twelve. So what did they do with the extra four transistors? Two are used as detector diodes, and the other four are used in lieu of a second I.F. stage in a darlington(?) configuration. The radio is employing a huge amount of interstage amplification which makes the radio exceptionally sensitive and easy to tune. It’s used. The cabinet shows signs of spending some time getting a suntan wearing its case. I didn’t receive the case, just the radio. The cabinet worn and scuffed from use. It has no chips. Nothing broken. As with the one on display at radiomuseum.org, it is missing its “12” script. It has a stainless front, so the radio is presentable. And as I said, this radio works very well. I usually service the vintage radios I sell on eBay because who wants a radio that doesn’t work, right? Serviced = I clean the volume control, check the radio’s alignment, and check its current draw. It’s loud. Volume control goes smoothly from totally silent to blazing overload loud. It produces a clean and clear sound. It’s sensitive. I was able to easily zoom straight to the local weak stations in my area I use to confirm a radio is working correctly. It is. I ship USPS Flat Rate.
