Description: Maker and purpose: With no maker's mark or other indication of age or origin, these two exquisite little eggshell or bisque porcelain cups remain a mystery. They may be individual serving dishes for salt or perhaps mustard, or even saki cups. They appear to be very old, both in the design and in the exceptionally thin and fine quality of the porcelain, which makes them very fragile and susceptible to damage. Design: Whatever their purpose, they are unusual and highly decorative objects, with eye-shaped cups of pink and pale green mounted on green glass stems. One is green outside and pink inside; the other is the opposite. Gold scrollwork appears on both cups. The glass stems are slightly different shades of green; the bases are amber colored. Size: The cups are 2 1/4 inches long, 2 3/4 inches tall and very lightweight - together they weigh just 1.5 ounces. Condition: The pink cup is in excellent condition for its presumed age and fragile material, with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, stains, discoloration, repairs or significant wear. There is light wear to both pieces. The green cup is slightly wobbly on its stem and has a faint old hairline crack near the bottom - that's shown in the photo with the red arrow. Though the cups were carefully examined for damage, there may be small flaws that are not described here so please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
