Hailing from a small hamlet in Jefferson County New York, a county located along that state's northern maritime border with Canada, Theresa was once home to the Farmers National Bank. As an institution the Farmers National Bank was established in 1906 following an amendment to the National Banking Act passed in 1900 which provided for the establishment of banks with just a capitalization of $25,000 in communities smaller than 3,000. The bank itself survived past 1935 and was likely merged or acquired in the years following WWII. In any case, this note represents a rare offering as this example is just 1 of 11 recorded by the National Bank Note Census for this small hamlet tucked away in the hinterlands of Upstate New York.
