Description: Additional Information from Movie Mars Product Description The fact that Candlemass' 2002-2003 reunion tour was such a big deal in Europe yet caused barely a ripple of recognition among American heavy metal fans was sadly symptomatic of the less than euphoric reception accorded the "classic" lineup's genre-defining albums during their original release in the late '80s. Or perhaps it simply speaks volumes of the generational gap perpetrated by grunge during the '90s, the difficulties of obtaining work visas post-9/11 -- who really knows? Whatever the cause, the point is that this two-DVD set may provide the only glimpse into that event for stateside fans. Disc one contains the triumphant, hometown concert that ended the tour: featuring 90 minutes' worth of Candlemass doom standards ("Well of Souls," "Ancient Dreams," "Solitude," etc.), plus one new track ("Witches") later found on their eponymous comeback album, and revealing the band to be in remarkably fine form for their age. Singer Messiah Marcolin (resplendent, as usual, in monk's habit and leather pants!) hits the odd bum note, but still never fails to awe with his incomparable operatic bellowing. Disc two contains the mother load for devout Candlemass fans. First, a 55-minute interview with bandmembers Marcolin, Leif Edling, and Mats Bjorkman (conducted in Swedish, with English and German subtitles) finds them recounting their various childhood experiences (aided by many, often quite comical, old pictures) as well as the major events characterizing their entire career thereafter. Scenes from the making of their 2005 video "Black Dwarf" (again, to be found on their comeback album) are interspersed throughout, but, incidentally, weren't subtitled for some reason -- thanks a lot! Second, and much, much better are the three separate vintage live performances that follow: a primordial 1987 Uppsala gig with original lead guitarist Christian Weberyd helping out on "Under the Oak" and "Samarithan"; a glory-days 1989 Fagersta show where "Mirror Mirror," "Bewitched," and "A Sorcerer's Pledge" are received by the audience like so much rapturous gospel; and a decidedly decadent 1992 Uddevalla show with Messiah's much-reviled successor, Tomas Vikstrom, hamming it up on "The Ebony Throne" and "Julie Laughs No More." Cap it all off with an embarrassingly soul-crushing mime performance of "The Dying Illusion" on Swedish television, and a pathetic photo gallery containing all of six pictures, and the band's rags-to-riches-to-rags arc is pretty much fulfilled. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia About Movie Mars All items are Brand New.
