Description: Here's a great Gift Idea! Serah Senegal Moon (Great Northern Arts 61012, 1997, UPC# 008206101224) (Category: New Age, Atmospheric, Folk Music CD) ¤NEW!¤ This hard-to-find Compact Disc is new, factory sealed, and guaranteed against manufacturer's defects! ¤NEW!¤ The problem with Serah - if there is one - is that her music is so difficult to classify. (A condition she seems pleased about.) She's usually presented as a "New Age" artist, and perhaps rightfully so. But the term "New Age" brings to mind light, simple, (dare I say pretentious) and often non-melodic jazz pieces suitable for relaxing, non-critical listening, and of course, making out. Serah is absolutely nothing like that. Mention "folk music" and you think of Pete Seeger or The Kingston Trio singing about courtship and train wrecks. Serah is definitely nothing like that. Think of "singer/songwriter" and James Taylor, Carly Simon, or Joni Mitchell come to mind. You would never think of Serah like that. Yet Serah's music combines elements of all of that, and adds touches of ethnic voices, music, and instruments, and forms them into incredibly complex, lush, engaging compositions. This is not casual music to play in the background - It requires listening. But for your attention, the listener will be rewarded with beautifully pleasant music, sophisticated arrangements, and richly imaged lyrics. Serah's voice, while earnest, is light and sometimes willowy, and she sings with the same excitement and enthusiasm as a mother reading a story to a wide-eyed child. Yet the overall effect of the complex music and simple, confident singing is both pleasing and absorbing. This is an easy album to like, and gets better and better with repeated listening. (Williamson Valley News Observer) "On her fourth album (not counting seasonal releases), Serah continues to produce lush recordings of atmospheric ballads, suggesting an American expatriate Enya singing with a Midwestern twang rather than an Irish lilt. This highly produced album (with Dire Straits producer Neil Dorfsman behind the board) is the artist's version of Graceland, merging her simple, folky melodies with African instrumentation, music, and vocals. This makes for an odd juxtaposition, as the backup singers alternately wail in their native languages and join Serah in her sensitively sung, poetically vague lyrics full of references to nature, romance, music, and France (where the album was recorded)."
