Description: SCHREINER OF NY, VERIFIED by grandson of Henry Schreiner. NEAR MINT CONDITION. Brooch/Pendant w/Original Chain with Hook & Tail Closure. Every aspect of this piece demonstrates Schreiners style, choice of materials and methods of construction. All confirmed by Stephen, Henry Schreiner’s grandson. The last living family member who worked with his family producing these amazing pieces. The opportunity to have an open dialogue with Stephen is invaluable and a rare gift offered through a blog for collectors. Below is his response to my post of three pics from gallery above; on a blog that he’s been gracious enough to help teach the readers how to distinguish Schreiner pieces from the sea of other designers from that time period, who either knowingly, or unknowingly, appropriated many of Schreiner’s, design concepts and construction techniques. Through Stephen’s tutelage, the reader hopefully learns that it’s in the details of construction /production that help either authenticate or differentiate the piece in question. Differentiate it from Schreiner leading to an attribution to one of the competition who produced similar high quality costume jewelry. D&E, Regency or Austria and many other reputable costume jewelry manufacturing houses. As well as disreputable design houses both from years past as well as current manufacturers, that purposefully copy designs as close as possible to fool the consumer. “Yes David it is one of ours, with the original chain. Lucky find! Stephen” Stephen and his mother grew frustrated with so many mis-identified $$$ pieces being sold on eBay as their families work. (Again the sellers intent might be an honest, mistake, or just the opposite… intent, to hoodwink the buyer.) The blog also allows some of the incorrect information that’s been published in articles and books over the decades to be cleared up. You might ask why they care so much? The company was founded by Henry Schreiner in the thirties. After his passing his daughter and son in law took over. Schreiner specialized in working with a number of the top fashion houses of the time, to produce jewelry that would be sold as a part of an ensemble from that fashion house. (Originally designers sold their creations as an entire look; not as "separates". That included the designers concept for companion jewelry.) Stephen's father, Ambrose, worked closely with the fashion houses and produced a limited number of pieces per each clients order. Because of this, many pieces were not signed. The client (whether that was a fashion house or department store) wanted unsigned pieces made by Schreiner but ultimately sold to the consumer with their brand name attached. Totally normal in the day. Some of those designs were produced afterwards by Schreiner with their mark. Others were never produced again. Like many high end costume jewelry houses who produced their work completely in house; means surviving pieces are usually few in number. Despite rumors and mis-publications, Schreiner never produced work for or in partnership with any other costume jewelry designers and/or manufacturing houses. Nor did they utilize "jobbers." (Outsourced production.) Although they had a number of long time employees, it sounded like every generation of the family was involved in manufacturing, production or sales. (Stephen’s mother, for instance, often wore prototype designs for a day. Testing comfort, and wearability in the span of a normal day. Her approval, obviously lead to the end result's construction. Those pieces that didn’t pass comfort for one reason or another, were redesigned.) In a nutshell, the family generations would help out from a youngish age, being trained in different steps of assembly or production. Stephen was better at soldering. His sister was better at setting stones. Each individual family member played a role in the Schreiner legacy that was unknowingly being built over the decades. Each individual’s pride and great passion is evident, when, regarding these amazing shiny baubles; in part for each ones personal investment of their time and efforts. Along side of their devoted employees, loyal vendors, and clients; Schreiner would continue to lead the costume jewelry industry with daring design concepts, methodical, highest quality construction and an ability to stay ahead of their competition regarding the period fashions and trends. So I felt compelled to offer those who aren’t familiar with the Schreiner name and a brief backstory of the family in my best “cliff notes “efforts to you the potential buyer. It feels necessary to give a brief first hand family history, so that the statement below is more credible to and not questioned as fiction on my part. Likewise the title “verified by grandson of Schreiner” could easily be dismissed as false by a jaded buyer… if not for the time and effort, I have invested into explaining how fortunate I and others are by following this blog. I do sometimes exhaustive research trying to attribute the correct designer to an unsigned piece. This is especially important in an age of fake news and chosen truths. We got lucky in Stephen’s generous contributions of his firsthand knowledge. This beauty came to me through an estate sale. I nearly peed my pants when I saw it. I hope it has the same effect upon its new owner. Note: This piece has been gently cleaned with mild dish detergent. As with all the pieces that sell, unless otherwise noted, this item has been cleaned and inspected for damage. Ready to wear! Please feel free to ask any questions or request additional images. Please use pics as part of description as I cannot accept returns. This piece will be shipped with insurance included cost paid for by the seller. I can combine shipping if interested in more than one item. Message me after the sale of your first item and let me know you’re interested in additional item(s). After additional sales are finalized, I will be able to send invoice with adjusted shipping cost based on the weight. International buyers please note: I have opted out of eBay’s new international shipping program. I will continue to sell to international buyers however, the shipping option will be through USPS first class shipping. For smoother transaction and shipment, please make sure your full legal name and address on file with eBay, is correct and written in the Roman alphabet (English). All international packages that require taxes, fees, duties or necessary additional customs paperwork are the buyers responsibility. Due to ever-evolving global circumstances, certain countries will not receive packages from the US. Please confirm that your location is able to receive packages from the US.
