Description: Schmidt & Co Victoria Austria Large Mantle Vase Hand Painted 1891-1918 Carlsbad A beautiful COFFEE POT made by SCHMIDT & Co. "VICTORIA" in Carlsbad, Austria HAND PAINTED with GOLD Accents, Flowers, Enamel Raised Beads & Embossing, circa 1904-1918 DESCRIPTION: The artwork on this is beautiful with the floral garland weaving across the line of enamel blue raised beads. The same pattern is repeated on the lid that has a ribbon ring Handle. While the lid is embossed, the embossing on the lower body of the coffee pot is elaborate. The spout, rims and handles are all trimmed in gold. The artist who designed this coffee pot was obviously very talented as was expected for Victoria decorators. CONDITION: The condition of this coffee pot is excellent. We can find no defects and only minor damage. The only (age appropriate) gold wear is a small nick in the gold rim to the pot. Consult photo #8. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, or hairlines. Otherwise, the gold appears to be in excellent shape. See the photos to judge its beauty for yourself. As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky. DIMENSIONS: This stands 9 1/4" high to the top of the lid. Handle to spout, the measurement is 7 1/2". The maximum diameter is 5 1/4". The scalloped base diameter is 3 5/8". The capacity of the coffee pot is 48 ounces. HISTORY/MARKS: Importers Lazarus and Rosenfeld Ltd. based in London, with showrooms in NYC, Australia & South Africa was founded in 1883. The Victoria Porzellanfabrik is in a suburb of Carlsbad in Altrohlau, Bohemia, Austria. Two years later, this factory was sold to Frank Schmidt under whose guidance it became the largest factory in the famed Carlsbad porcelain district. The choice of location was no accident due to the entire region being in the Ore Mountains which is the home of many Kaolin mines. Kaolin is an essential ingredient for the manufacturing of high quality hard paste porcelain. Production concentrated on fine quality decorative household and hotel porcelain. Marshal Fields Department Store was their major US importer, allowing "Victoria" Schmidt & Co. to employ 975 workers by 1900. The mark on this is the green over glaze mark #9 cited by the website marms4ceramics. This mark was used in the 1904-1918 time period. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
