The inscription says “Our Lady of Mount Carmel Pray For Us.” This means that when blessed by a priest the medal can also be worn as a scapular. In 1251 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St Simon Stock, the Prior General of the Carmel, and said to him “Whosoever dies clothed in this scapular (Brown Scapular) shall not suffer eternal fire.” In 1910 Pope St Pius X approved the Scapular Medal, which may be substituted for the traditional clothe Brown Scapular. The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece.
