Description: Mn. Cordius Rufus | AR Denarius Reference: RRC 463/3 Date: 46 BCE Obverse: RVFVS·S·C: Head of Venus, right, wearing diadem. Border of dots. Reverse: M͡N·CORDIVS : Cupid on dolphin, right. Border of dots. Mint: Rome Size: 19.6 mm Weight: 3.51 grams Mn. Cordius Rufus was a Roman moneyer who struck coins two years before the assassination of Julius Caesar. Mn. Cordius Rufus was of Tusculan origin and is otherwise known from an inscription (ILLRP 414), on which the tenure of the office of Praetor was recorded in the Tusculan language. This coin was struck three years into Julius Caesar's dictatorship for life, and the design was likely a conscious choice to honor Julius Caesar's claim to have descended from Venus. Whether Caesar appreciated this attempt to gain favor is unknown. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
