Moultrie, a colonel with the 2nd South Carolina Colonial regiment, was elevated to the stature of national hero during the Charleston expedition against Clinton in 1776 for his defense of the fort that was later named after him. He later commanded a successful action at Beaufort in 1779 but was made a British prisoner of war with the Charleston expedition of 1780. He was exchanged in 1782, and became the last officer in the Continental Army to be appointed to the grade of Major General.
