GENERAL KUNO VON STEUBEN - CLIPPED SIGNATURE - HFSID 24421 KUNO VON STEUBEN Signature of the German Corps Commander in World War I, a relative of the von Steuben who trained George Washington's army Signature: (in German, partly translated: "Kuno v Steuben" He has added his rank of Lieutenant General, followed by un-translated military abbreviations. 3¼x1½ Kuno von Steuben (1899-1971), a distant relative of Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who trained George Washington's army, occupied important staff positions in the German Army before World War I, including Senior Quartermaster General and Director of the Imperial War Academy. When war broke out, von Steuben proved a highly capable field commander. A corps commander on the Western front, he participated in many of the key battles, including the First Battle of the Marne and the Battle of Verdun. In 1917, he moved east to take command of German forces on the Macedonian front. In 1931, the US government invited von Steuben to the 150th anniversary observances of the Battle of Yorktown.
