Description: The Tolkien Reader: Stories, Poems and Commentary by J.R.R. Tolkien published by Ballantine Books, 1977. First Ballantine Books Edition, 28th Printing. Softcover. Cover and illustrations by Pauline Baynes. This book is an anthology of stories, poems, and commentaries by the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It begins with an introduction on Tolkien's world of fantasy by Peter S. Beagle titled Tolkien's Magic Ring. This book is an indispensable addition to a Tolkien collector's library. CONTENTS: Publisher's Note TOLKIEN'S MAGIC RING THE HOMECOMING OF BEORHTNOTH BEORHTHELM'S SON TREE AND LEAF FARMER GILES OF HAM THE ADVENTURES OF TOM BOMBADIL The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son describes a historical tenth-century battle between the English and Viking invaders. Tree and Leaf contains two of his works: “On Fairy-stories” and“Leaf by Niggle”that examine and illustrate the form and treatment of fantasy narratives. On Fairy Stories, Tolkien discusses the nature of fairy-tales & fantasy and rescues the genre from those who would relegate it to juvenilia. Leaf by Niggle is an allegory of Tolkien's own creative process, and, to an extent, of his own life. Niggle is an obsessive artist who has to respond both to the pressures of his absorption in his creative ideas and to the demands of living an ordinary life in the ordinary world. Farmer Giles of Ham is a story full of wit and humor that follows the unheroic Farmer Giles as he attempts to capture a somewhat untrustworthy dragon. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is a collection of delightful songs and verses featuring a number of hobbit legends, from tales of princesses, dwarves and trolls, to stories of Old Oliphaunt and the Man in the Moon.
