JOSEF KOPF ETCHING STILL LIFE 1928

Description: Josef Kopf (1893-1953), Still Life; etching; 1928. Sheet 9 1/2 x 7", plate 4 1/4 x 5 3/4". Very fine condition, some slight toning, two very slightly marred corners, well outside image. Signed in plate LL "Jos. Kopf 1928". While best known as a painter of architecture, Kopf was a wonderfully evocative creator of the still life, in both oil and watercolor. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Art, traveled often to Paris and Holland (Kopf's work pays a more than passing reference to the Dutch Masters), and exhibited quite often in Vienna in the early decades of the 20th C. He was given the Art Prize of the City of Vienna in 1916 and 1917, later in life receiving the prestigious Golden Laurel of the Vienna Kunsterhaus (1953). This piece appears to be from a folio of either his work or perhaps a selection of still lifes. I have seen no other etching of a Kopf painting.
