Only the children seemed to penetrate his disguise and recognize the goodness of the man. Having come to America as a young German missionary to upstate New York, John Neumann was the first Redemptorist to make his solemn profession in this country. He died in 1860, leaving a thriving diocese of 145 churches and a flock of 200,000 griev- ing Catholics who were too late aware that a saint had walked among them. THE AUTHOR Elizabeth Odell Sheehan was born in Water- rown, New York. She received a B.A. degree from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, and did graduate work in philosophy at Catholic University of America, With her husband, Arthur Sheehan, she is the author of Pierre Toussaint, Father Damien and the Bells, and Rose Hawthorne, the latter two Vision Books. The Sheehans live in New York City with their rwo daughters.
