Description: Lithograph print in black ink, 23 1/2" by 17", the imagery a court scene with three figures, the initial "f" at lower right showing this to be a work of the well-known French artist Jean-Louis Forain 1852-1931. The print is quite compelling, the simple composition showing clearly the skill of the artist. Forain was in his time better known than he is today---a good friend and follower of Degas and Manet, and followed by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Forain's Paris was a rich artistic environment and clearly he knew many of the figures of his day. A student of Gerome and Carpeaux, he was influenced by Goya and also, Daumier. Forain was a major caricaturist of his time. This print likely dates to the early years of the new century. There is no glass and the simple frame is modern. Despite the lack of glass the print is in essentially good condition; there is a damp stain at lower margin about 3" long by 1/2" high, which could be easily hidden by a mat, which is presently lacking. There are some handling creases especially at bottom and at right.
