Description: Japanese Dragon Ware Geisha Girl Lithophane Eggshell Porcelain Hand Painted Orange Tea Set 27pcs This extraordinary eye-catching tea set was made in Japan with a large brush strokes of a swirled orange glaze decorated with a raised dragon motif handles, spouts and dragon head finials on the lids of the tea pot, creamer and sugar. All 27 pieces tea set has dragons all around and a geisha in the bottom of the cups. Delicate tea set depicting a dragon design and made of a thin eggshell porcelain. Cups contain lithophane Geisha image in the bottom when held up to light! The porcelain is so fine (called eggshell porcelain) that you can easily see light through. The lids are decorated with dragon handles. Hand painted in rusty orange with white dots - the so-called moriage art with textured dragons on a deep orange background, accented with brown, gold and green colors. The moriage (raised dots) is quite profuse on these pieces. All Marked on bottom 日本 - Nihon (Japan). Made approx. from 1868 thru beginning of Showa up to W.W. II. That period is characterized by bold and bright colors, detailed moriage, decorated with rich raised decoration. In fact up to Meiji period Kutani ceramics were only known under the name of Kaga ceramics. Kaga being the old name of the Prefecture (Kaga Han North part of Ishikawa Prefecture today). The name Kutani became known outside the area only from middle or end of Meiji.
