Description: The Story of Liberty and Carthage Jails in told by Joseph A. and Eunice H. McRae, who were called on a mission to carthage, Illinois, in 1938, where they labored more than twelve years as caretakers of the "Old Jail." Under their direction it was restored to its original condition, after it had suffered much abuse for more than 100 years. Several old buildings were razed, the grounds were cleared of the accumulated rubbish, leveled and made ready for the planting of lawns, shrubs, trees and flowers, that it might be made attractive to the more than 50,000 visitors from all parts of the world who would come to see the historic old building during the twelve years. Brother McRae's grandfather, Alexandr McRae, was incarcerated in Liberty Jail, Missouri, with the Prophet Joseph Smith and others for a period of nearly six months. The baby son of Alexandr was taken to the jail by his mother, where he was blessed by the Prophet Joseph Smith and was given the name of Joseph. This was the father of Brother McRae.
