A scarce, bronze coin struck at the Roman colony of Brundisium in Magna Graecia during Hannibal's invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War. Brundisium, located on the Adriatic coast of southern Italy, was a Messapian and then Roman town of great strategic and commercial importance throughout antiquity. The maritime aspect of the city is advertized on the obverse of the coin with Poseidon and his trident (8 o'clock). On the reverse, the coin portrays its mythical founder Phalanthos, the dolphin-riding divine hero from Sparta. The Greek city's political history was changed when the Romans conquered it in 266 BCE and established a colony there in 247 or 244 BCE. Brundisium soon became the main point of departure for anyone travelling to Greece or the East and usurped Tarentum's position as the most important port in the south. During the Second Punic War, Brundisum resisted Hannibal's attempts to capture it, thus defying him an important resupply base for his Italian campaigns.
