Description: Gladiolus Namaquensis - Botanical Flower Print by Jane Loudon A colour print, rescued from a disbound book of floral prints from 1991 with unrelated text on the reverse. Original printing date 1800s, this is a reprint. Suitable for framing, the picture size is approx 4" x 6" or 10.5cm x 15cm plus a small white border approx 2mm. This is a vintage print from the not a modern copy and can show signs of age or previous use commensurate with the age of the print. Please view the scans as they form part of the description. The Gladiolus (bottom left) ORDER: Iridaceae. GENUS: Gladiolus. Gladiolus namaquensis, the Namaqua-land Gladiolus, is a native of the west coast of South Africa beyond the Orange River. It was introduced in 1800. (1) Gladiolus psittacinus, the Parrot Gladiolus, grows three or four feet high in the open ground and sends up four or five spikes of flowers. (2) Gladiolus trichonemjfolius, the Trichonema or Thread-leaved Gladiolus, flowers in May and was introduced from the Cape about 1810. (3) Gladiolus algoensis, the Algoa-Bay Gladiolus, is another of the viper division of gladioli with flowers of the same peculiar shape. (4) Gladiolus colvilli, Mr Colvill's Gladiolus, is a hybrid raised in 1823 by Mr Colvill and grows about a foot and a half high. (5) Gladiolus watsonius, Mr Watson's Gladiolus, grows about a foot or eighteen inches high and must be grown in a pot as it flowers in February. (6)
