Description: This is a rare piece of sheet music for the popular standard "THE MAN I LOVE" which was cut during the out-of-town tryouts of the GEORGE GERSHWIN, IRA GERSHWIN and GEORGE S. KAUFMAN musical comedy "STRIKE UP THE BAND" in Long Branch, New Jersey. (The original production began tryouts on August 29th, 1927 in Long Branch, New Jersey and September 5th, 1927 in Philadelphia, but closed on the road. The show would eventually open January 14th, 1930 at the Times Square Theatre in New York City and run for 191 performances.) ..... The 1927 cast included HERBERT CORTHELL, MORTON DOWNEY, VIVIAN HART, MAX HOFFMANN, Jr., EDNA MAY OLIVER, ROGER PRYOR and JIMMY SAVO. The 1930 Original Broadway production starred BOBBY CLARK and PAUL McCULLOUGH and featured BLANCHE RING, GORDON SMITH, ROBERT BENTLEY, DUDLEY CLEMENTS, KATHRYN HAMILL, DORIS CARSON, MARGARET SCHILLING, JERRY GOFF, HAROLS WOOLF, MARION MILLER, ETHEL BRITTON, VIRGINIA BARNES, VINCENT CURRAN and JOYCE COLES with RED NICHOLS and his Orchestra ..... Hiistorical note: The George Gershwin standard "THE MAN I LOVE" was originally written in 1924 for "Lady, Be Good", but was cut from that show during tryouts. It was added to the original production of "Strike Up the Band", but once again ended up being cut from the show. It was considered for, then rejected from, the 1928 Ziegfeld hit "Rosalie" ..... The back cover advertises George Gershwin's latest musical comedy successes "Tip-Toes" and "Lady, Be Good" (last scanned image) ..... CONDITION: (Please Note!) There is considerable edge wear including a clipped corner to the lower right corner of the cover and several small edge tears. There is light soiling to the covers and creasing at the corners. Despite these flaws, this rare piece of sheet music will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
