Description: What a great piece! This is a nice Fenton Milk Glass candy box — compatible with Silver Crest because of the glass finial on the handle. Handcrafted by skilled glass artists. A real work of art! But what makes this piece more special than a normal silver crest bowl is the presence of the "Charleton" Raspberries decoration. “Decorating companies” were successful in the 1930’s and 40’s; they bought European glass and decorated it here for sales in stores. When WWII closed off the ability of European glass companies to sell to the United States, companies like Abels, Wasserburg in New York City turned to domestic suppliers. Fenton was one of their major manufacturers. They bought Fenton blanks from the regular line through the 1940's and decorated them with exquisite floral and other patterns. “Charleton” was the trade name for the glass decorated by Abels, Wasserburg, and is the name that Fenton collectors use for this practice. I can't date this exactly, other than to say it's likely from the 40's. As for the glass, there are a couple of kicks in the glass on the very inside of the rim — see pics — perhaps roughness as made, perhaps from putting the lid on. No other chips or cracks. The paint is almost perfect — the raspperries are almost mint, the the gold enamel is very good except for some slight fading on the handle and one or two other spots, as is common with AWCO decorations. This pattern is not seen nearly as often as most of Charleton floral decorations! The item measures about 6 inches tall and about 5.5 inches wide at its widest. My inventory number is B68N.
