Description: About the Book "There is only one Nelson" - these are the words of Lord St. Vincent. There have been many brave and patriotic Englishmen, great kings, great admirals and great generals, but we don't treat them the way we treat Nelson. The noise and screams subside - the generals and kings leave, but Nelson is alive, an unchanging memory for all Englishmen: immortalized by their love and gratitude. To properly understand this gratitude and love, we must try to understand what Nelson did and who Nelson was. Robert Southey was an outstanding writer, an extremely kind and noble man, noble, industrious, with a simple life and a good heart. He was a friend of Wordsworth, Coleridge and Sir Walter Scott. He wrote many long poems, short stories and biographies, many in the Quarterly Review. He was Poet Laureate. Of his numerous writings, two poems are now best known: "After Blenheim" and "The Scholar”, as well as "The Life of Nelson", published in 1813. It is difficult to overestimate the life of Nelson. It is, in the words of Sir Humphry Davy, "an immortal monument erected by genius to valor." Even Macaulay, who differed from Southey in politics and attacked him in a very vicious essay, recognizes his charm. “Nelson's best eulogy,” says Southey himself, “is the true story of his actions; the best story is the one that tells about them most clearly”; and the book proves the validity of his remark. South's style in this book has many advantages and few disadvantages: it is clear, energetic, and natural. Southey, at least here, is never boring, monotonous, casual, or cutesy: and the book closes with an immortal passage whose sublime and noble music is seldom compared to the English language.About us Trieste Publishing’s aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time.
