Description: Chief Ben American Horse, an Ogalala Sioux was "discovered" by Buffalo Bill Cody in 1913 and employed as his interpreter and was also cast in Cody's reenactment shows. He attended Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania where he played baseball and football with Jim Thorpe. The artist first met Chief American Horse in 1940. They became fast friends and the Chief adopted the artist as his nephew in 1951. Miller was a consultant on more than 20 westerns and was able to place Ben American Horse in a number of movies. A 1974 descriptive letter from the artist on the subject, Chief Ben American Horse, is included with the portrait.
