Daniel Keyes was born in New York, New York in 1927 and he died in Boca Raton, Florida in 2014. He attended New York University briefly before joining the United States Maritime Service at age 17, working as a ship’s purser on oil tankers. After his service he received a B.A. in psychology from Brooklyn College. After his graduation Keyes joined publisher Martin Goodman’s magazine company, Magazine Management. Eventually he became an editor of their pulp magazine Marvel Science Stories and also began writing for Atlas Comics, the 1950’s precursors of Marvel Comics. After Goodman ceased publishing pulps in favor of paperback books and men’s adventure magazines, Keyes became an associate editor of Atlas under editor-in-chief and art director Stan Lee, who was, of course, the famous comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer and who was Marvel’s primary creative leader for two decades. Lee became famous for his help in creating the famous comic book characters Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, and other famous Marvel characters. One story idea that Kaye wrote but did not submit to Lee was called “Brainstorm”, the paragraph-long synopsis that would evolve into FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. It begins “The first guy in the test to raise the I.Q. from a low normal 90 to genius level . . . He goes through the experience and then is thrown back to what was.” Keyes recalled, “something told me it should be more than a comic book script.” The short story and subsequent novel, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, is written as progress reports of a mentally disabled man, Charlie, who undergoes experimental surgery and beefy becomes a genius before the effects tragically wear off. The story was initially published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and the expanded novel in 1966. The novel has been adapted several times for other media, most prominently as the 1968 film “Charley,” starring Cliff Robertson (who won an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Claire Bloom. Keyes also won the Hugo Award in in 1959 for the shorter version of the story and the Nebula Award in 1966 for the novel. Later Keyes taught creative writing at Wayne State University, and in 1966 he became an English and Creative Writing Professor at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, where he was honored as a professor emeritus in 2000. Keyes was the author of such excellent novels as FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON (offered here), THE TOUCH, THE FIFTH SALLY, THE MINDS OF BILLY MILLIGAN, UNVEILING CLAUDIA, and several others. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE book in a VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its medium gray-colored full-cloth binding with blue lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct orange endpapers. The book has a touch of wear at the lower spine cloth edge and a touch of wear at the lower front corners; basically unobtrusive. Overall, the book is in excellent condition; much better than is usually encountered. The dust jacket is the correct 1st state with the publisher's price of $4.95 on the upper right corner of the front flap, which is important in that later printings of the dust jackets look exactly like the 1st printing except that the prices on those dust jackets are higher than $4.95. The largely white dust jacket shows no tanning (unusual thus) and very little rubbing. The dust jacket has undergone some slight archival restoration (using non-acidic materials), mainly at the spine edges and at the flap fold edges, that has been accomplished by a professional paper conservationist, that includes a small amount of color touch-up. The famous and fantastic dust jacket artwork is by the excellent artist Carl Smith. There is a wonderful contemporary photograph of Daniel Keyes on the rear flap of the dust jacket.
