Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Twenty-five years after the end of the Civil War there was an increasing number of Confederate veterans experiencing physical, mental and financial issues. Local and state veteran groups were formed to maintain communications and provide support. And an increasing number of care facilities were built to house veterans and provide medical care. One example is Robert E. Lee Camp #1, which was built in Richmond, Virginia with Confederate and Union veteran funds. It was active from 1885 to 1941. It served a total of 3.000 residents, providing housing, dining halls, medical care and a chapel for religious and funeral services. In later years it built a new building to house Confederate widows and daughters. Regular veteran reunions were held here and in other states. Beginning in 1893 the Confederate Veteran Magazine was published monthly for $1 annual subscription. Magazines were sent to local groups and to veteran camps. The magazine was “intended as an organ of communication between Confederate soldiers and those who are interested in them and their affairs”.
