Description: Carl Hering (1860-1926) was one of the most outstanding figures in electric engineering in the world. He was a pioneer in the field of design and construction of electrical apparatus. He was a productive researcher in electrochemical and electrophysical fields, and the discoverer of several fundamental natural laws. He researched storage batteries designed and improved the electric furnace, and made discovers regarding electromagnetic force. He also published well received works about mechanical and electrical engineering. In 1900-1901 Hering was president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Offered for sale is his Electricity at the Paris Exposition of 1869, Forming a Portion of volume IV of the Reports of the United States Commissioners to the Universal Exposition of 1889 at Paris (New York: The W. J. Johnston Company, Ltd., 1893). A second title page reads: Report on Electricity (Class of 62), by Carl Hering. This seems to be a misnomer, as Hering, educated at the University of Pennsylvania, received an honorary degree of Sc.D. from the school in 1882. One important goal of the Paris Exposition was to present the latest in science in technology. From the Preface: "The official report on the electrical features of the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889 is included among a large number of reports by United States Commissioners to the various departments of the Exposition, and the whole has just been published collectively by the Government. October 1893." Owing to the very many groups and classes comprised, the publication is not only cumbersome in form, but inconvenient for ready reference and use, and as its circulation will probably be confined chiefly to public and large libraries, the work will not be readily obtainable by those who desire copies. In offering this volume to the public, the publishers endeavor to meet the wishes of those to whom the collection of official reports will not be accessible, or who desire the complete portion on electricity in a convenient form for reading and reference. Although ready for the press three years ago, this volume could not be published until after the publication of the complete report; most of the latter, however, is of a technical character not affected by the delay. The present volume contains all that portion of the complete report which refers to the department of Electricity, including an account off the work done by the international Congress of Electricians held at the time of the Exposition. The edition is limited to a small number of copies. Hardcover, 1st, 250 pp., patterned end papers, b/w ills. Covers moderately soiled/worn; corners and tops and bottom of spine rubbed; front end paper loosening; thin paper pages that are lightly toned. Very scarce copy of a fascinating view into the state of the art at the time. Very few copies of the original printing are to be found. Most libraries have a modern reprinting or an eBook copy. Donโt be shy; give it a try. Doc deals!
