Description: This is an 8 & 1/2 inch antique porcelain plate made by Imperial Crown China of Austria. It is decorated with handpainted blackberries and pink blossoms and is hand signed by the artist, looks like MARTIN. Also on the back above the Imperial Crown China backstamp, are the words “Art Studio Hand Painted” in red cursive. So this was indeed decorated by an artist! Information on the web shows the backstamp as the mark of decorator and importer Bawo and Dotter, who decorated their porcelain at their studio in a region known then as Bohemia, part of Austria, now in the Czech Republic. They were founded in 1893 and continued to 1914, so this plate was made then. The plate is in excellent shape, with no chips, cracks, or crazing that I can see. It looks as if it was mostly displayed over the years. At an angle to the light, there are a few utensils marks that I can see. The entire plate appears to have been painted, so it is not a glossy glaze, but more of a satin shine. The background is an off white with a blue fade on part of the plate, that matches the blue fade leaves. The back of the plate is a shiny glaze on white porcelain.
