Description: Decorative unclipped dustjacket is illustrated on the front with a text block and a steam locomotive pulling into the Virginia City train depot. The rear of the dustjacket has advertisements for other books offered by the Sandford University Press. Dustjacket has multiple pieces missing, rubbing/curling to the top and bottom as well as age darkening to the inside, now protected in a Mylar cover. Bright gray spine and salmon cloth boards have a steam engine to the front board with text to the spine in black. There is just a small touch of wear at each of the corners of the back strip and a discoloration blemish to the lower left front board, otherwise boards are in very nice condition with no other blemishes or marks. Corners are sharp with just a small point of wear. Spine is straight and firm, with no cracking to the endpapers. The front and rear endpapers have a map of all the Bonanza Railroads. Text block is solid with all pages firmly attached. Slight age tanning throughout. Previous owner name and address on inside blank page. Last blank page has slight crease otherwise interior pages are in perfect condition - clean, with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. 148 pages including index. Dimensions: H – 10-1/4” W – 7” The Bonanza Railroads were “exciting and important was the part these five railroads played in pioneer days. Each had its great ambitions – to monopolize a bonanza; to make some obscure town the Chicago of the West; to build on across the continent, or at least into the next state. Eventually they all faded away.” Bonanza Railroads “preserves the past with exciting and colorful stories with anecdotes, illustrations, charts, and numerous black and white photographs.” Gilbert H. Kneiss (1899 – 1964) had a passion for railroads and locomotives. He joined the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society in 1929 and founded the Pacific Coast Chapter in 1937. At the New York World’s Fair “Railroads on Parade” and at the San Francisco International Exposition’s “Cavalcade of America” he was the technical director. He later became the assistant to the president and heard of the new public relations department for the Western Pacific Railroad and authored two books during this time.
