The fruits are very astringent, but can be cooked to produce good flavor for jellies; the flowers can be candied. Thebarkproduces a tannin-rich dye. These trees are quite salt-tolerant. A population of Blackthorn can be a beautiful sight in early spring, as they can dominate the landscape with white flowers. The flowers appear before the leaves, often as early as in March. You do not want to come too close to a wild Blackthorn bush though. Blackthorn is said to have been associated with dark witchcraft. Where is Black Thorn found? The species is native to Europe, western Asia, and regionally in northwest Africa. It is locally naturalized in New Zealand, Tasmania, and the Pacific Northwest and New England regions of the United States.
