THE STORY: My husband was a jazz and blues enhusiast while in college. He and his friend actually had the courage to jump up on the stage and casually walk backstage to meet BILLY ECKSTINE and DIZZY GILLESPIE after their concert at Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto (November 24, 1989). They were thrilled with getting personal interaction and autographs of these jazz pioneers. He treasured this trophy throughout all these years, but finally decided to share it with others and sell it. I would recommend mounting this treasure in a beautiful frame with UV light protection glass to protect it for future generations. DIZZY GILLESPIE Born: October 21, 1917 in Cheraw, South Carolina Died: January 6, 1993 in Englewood, New Jersey. Dizzy Gillespie (1917-1993), noted for his bent trumpet, pioneered the bebop style of jazz. A composer as well as a superb trumpet player, Gillespie's most noted piece was "A Night in Tunisia." Gillespie won Grammy awards in 1975 and 1991. WILLIAM CLARENCE ECKSTINE (July 8, 1914 March 8, 1993) was an American jazz and pop singer, and a bandleader of the swing era. He was noted for his rich, resonant, almost operatic bass-baritone voice. Eckstine's recording of "I Apologize" (MGM, 1948) was awarded the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999. The New York Times described him as an "influential band leader" whose "suave bass-baritone" and "full-throated, sugary approach to popular songs inspired singers like Joe Williams, Arthur Prysock and Lou Rawls."
