AUTHOR: Dr. Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723 - 1799) DESCRIPTION: This three Volumes Edition of the BLOCH Fish Atlas has been published in remembrance of the 200th Anniversary of the death of the famous German doctor and biologist Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723 – 1799). The 3-volume edition of the best German fish classic: 432 hand-colored copper engravings are "Color-fast" (shrunk) and in the best print quality ever published, and more than 2000 pages of text (IN GERMAN). The old fish names have been classified and ordered next to the actual valid scientific names by Dr. Isaäc J.H. Isbrücker. The foreword has been written by Dr. H. J. Paepke, who assisted as an ichthyologist at the Humboldt-University, Berlin. The BAENSCH/MERGUS BLOCH ATLAS is a bibliophilic preciousness for fish fans, ichthyologists and book collectors. Each fish represented, has the scientific name and the common name in German, French and English in most cases Only about half a dozen of the original Edition of 1782-1795 (Bloch needed 13 years to finish this artwork!), is still available in museums. The rest has been destroyed over the decades due to wars and fires. The original BLOCH has a value of over 290.000,00 US$ today!!
