Booksellers and Publishers of London; undated, but previous owners gift inscription is dated 1938. 7.25 x 4.75 inches.] Beautifully printed book by the famous Asprey Publishers. Binding is not signed by Asprey, but this was one of their binderies standard designs. Bound in full Moroccan leather with five, gilt ruled, raised bands, handsome gold tooling in the compartments, on both covers, and on the inside covers! Title page printed with floral motif borders. Gilt tipped pages on all edges. Condition: Good to very good condition. Some foxing on title page and occasional spots and or age toning on page edges; heavier on earlier pages are very light throughout. Leather binding looks amazing and is still very bright; leather hinges, fully intact and there is no exterior damage; very light rubbing on a few small spots, but much much better than expected for a book of this age. Interior binding is tight, but boards are starting to bow; unfortunately, a common problem with Asprey's bindings. Overall, I would say this book is in very good - condition. It is a fictionalised account of the life of the philosopher Hypatia, and tells the story of a young monk called Philammon who travels to Alexandria, where he becomes mixed up in the political and religious battles of the day. Although intended as Christian apologia, the novel has a deliberate anti-Catholic tone, and it also reflects Kingsley's other prejudices about race and religion, many of which were typical to the 19th-century.
