Description: Unframed genuine antique steel engraving print depicting two views of Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester N.Y., one from 1838 and one from 1877. The second view shows the substantial development that occurred in the intervening years, with additions including iron fencing, a stone Gothic gatehouse, new mausoleums and statuary, an observation tower, and amenities such as a horse drawn street car. The entire sheet is approximately 14" x 11 1/2". The 1838 view is approximately 5" x 9" and the 1877 view is approximately 6 1/4" x 9". The paper exhibits toning consistent with age and indicia of prior framing (see images). Founded in 1838, Mt. Hope Cemetery was the first municipal cemetery in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Renowned for its picturesque hilly wooded terrain and High Victorian and Neoclassical statuary and gravestones, it extends over 196 acres and is the final resting place for more than 350,000 people, including such historic figures and Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. The Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery, a non-profit organization of volunteers, was founded in 1980 to restore, preserve, and encourage public use of this unique historical treasure.
