Description: A 19th century French (Italian?) opaline oval shaped glass box with beveled quilt pattern cut lid and gilt foliate accents to lid and box front. Opaline glassware having the appeance of fine porcelain quickly gained popularity throughout Europe and beyond, becoming a staple of elegant tableware, decorative objects, and lighting fixtures. A challenge to capture in the above images the box exudes a opalescent quality giving off a transluscent glow that quite resembles opal gemstones - hence the name Opaline glass. Opaline glass is a soft green color held by brass hinged frame. Exterior description: Looking close light surface scratches, tiny flea bite size chips concentrating mainly to outer edges, loss of gilding, damage to glass is noticed to the right and left corners from the hinge (image provided), the lid sits just slightly off kilter from its base, oxidation to brass - all commensurates with its antique age. Hinge works well. The lid is heavy tending to fall backward when opened without support. Interior shows molding marks, exposed cut ground for brass frame with knicks and small chips. In spite of age related callouts the box displays well overall. Dimensions: about 4 7/8" long, 3.5" deep. 3 1/8" tall.Glass box weighs 1 lb. 7 oz. Questions are welcome.
