Description: Payment | Shipping ANTIQUE GERMAN 4/4 TRADE VIOLIN - RESTORED, RE-GRADUATED & UPDATED - CIRCA 1920 ANTIQUE GERMAN 4/4 TRADE VIOLIN - RESTORED, REGRADUATED & UPDATED - CIRCA 1920 You are invited to purchase a very fine antique handcrafted German 4/4 (full size) Trade Violin. This violin appears to be based on the historical pattern of Anitonio Strativari and is slightly modified in the German Tyrolese manner with a relatively high arch and unusual varnish pattern. It has been expertly restored, repaired, re-graduated, reconditioned and updated with several new parts including geared pegs and modern strings (details below). It is now ready to be played again and enjoyed by an appreciative buyer. It will be shipped in a vintage hard case as described below. No bow is included. ORIGIN & DATE OF MANUFACTURE: This unbranded and unlabeled violin was most likely made in a small factory in the Vogtland region of Germany in the free state of Saxony at the southeastern part of Germany directly on the border with Czechoslovakia (now known as the Czech Republic). Based in part on the known characteristics of similar trade violins, its likely source location and on its overall physical condition upon receipt prior to being repaired/refurbished and re-graduated, we can conservatively date this instrument to circa 1920. It currently bears a printed year 2024 repair label from our violin repair shop (see image). KEY FEATURES: * A warm dark red-brown spirit varnish shaded over a golden ground. It has an unusual varnish pattern that was evidently designed by its maker as a basic way of imitating the varnish wear patterns of older violins from the early to mid-19th Century. * Two piece flamed Maple back with ribs and neck of flamed Maple to match the back. * Two piece Spruce top that has a relatively high arch. * Button stamped with the number "14." (See image) MEASUREMENTS: * Length Overall (LoA): 23.5" * Length of the body (LoB): 14" * Rib Height: 1 1/4" * Max Width of Upper Bout: 6 1/4" * Avg. Width at Waist or C-Bout: 4 3/8" * Max. Width of Lower Bout: 8" NATURE OF RESTORATION, RE-GRADUATION, REPAIRS & MODERN REFIT: This antique violin was received in relatively poor, dirty, but repairable cosmetic condition and with several missing parts. Our immediate observation was that it was evidently played quite a lot in the past (See BEFORE & AFTER RESTORATION composite image). Following is a summary of the actions taken to restore the violin to playability: 1. The top plate was removed from the violin and the original poorly carved-in base bar was removed and the entire top plate was re-graduated to a lesser thickness to improve its flexibility and tone. 2. The original carved-in and poorly shaped bass bar was replaced with a new properly configured bass bar that was glued in place with Hide Glue. 3. Three (3) age cracks in the top plate were cleaned, re-glued and cleated to stabilize the cracks. 4. It was quickly noted that only the rear corners of this violin were blocked. The upper two corners were blocked so that all 4 corners are now blocked. 5. There was a crack in the bottom plate were the soundpost was located. The crack was cleaned and re-glued. The interior crack area was stabilized with a new sound post patch (see image). 6. The central seam in the back plate was cleated to prevent any future separation. 7. After the above noted re-graduation and repair actions to both the top and bottom plates were completed, the top plate was re-glued to the ribs using Hide Glue. 8. All exterior surfaces of the violin were thoroughly cleaned of residual rosin and dirt using JOHA Varnish Cleaner. This was followed by a coating of French Polish. 9. The original degraded fingerboard was removed and replaced with a new Ebony fingerboard. In addition, a new Guarneri-style Ebony Chinrest was added to the violin. 10. The original nut, saddle, endpin, and Ebony tailpiece were retained and used on the restored violin. A new Viotti bridge and soundpost were fitted and adjusted for their respective proper positions. 11. The pegbox was fitted with new Wittner Finetune geared Pegs (Made in Germany). These geared pegs negate the need for fine tuners on the tailpiece as they are permanently set within the pegbox and have an 8:1 gear ratio, making for very precise tuning. Only the central knurled spool segment of the peg rotates. So once the Wittner pegs are set, they are not designed to be removed from the pegbox. (Please see the Wittner website for more details). NOTE: Conventional wood peg slippage is a big problem with most violins, something that a player definitely does not want to happen in the middle of a concert solo in front of a large audience. Wittner geared pegs totally eliminate peg slippage so one can play the violin even with vigor without worry. 12 Finally the violin was fitted with modern Medium Strings with a Dominant G string to complete the setup of the instrument (See images). All of the aforementioned repairs have resulted in a fully restored and functional antique trade violin from circa 1920, but with some modern enhancements so the violin performs at its best with modern synthetic strings. Thus, an antique instrument that could have easily been lost to time has been improved and reborn to live a second life in the present. It is now ready for the next fine player, who could be you, to put it to use. SOUND AND PLAYABILITY: The sound of this restored violin can be best described as having a sound that is full, powerful and inviting with an excellent response off the strings. The bottom end has a rich, mature tone and the top end rings well, both clean and clear. The re-graduation process has vastly improved the overall tonal response of the violin. HARD CASE: This violin will be shipped in an antique/ vintage hard case that was received with the violin itself (See composite image). Given its overall appearance, this case appears to be original to the violin likely from circa 1920. It had some exterior damage, which we have since repaired to a limited degree. However, it lacks a handle and some interior parts. Nevertheless, it will be protective of the refurbished violin for shipping purposes. The violin will be very carefully packed so as to prevent any movement while in transit to its new owner. After receipt of the violin, its new owner will most likely elect to invest in a new case as this restored antique instrument certainly deserves that level of care and attention. PURCHASE: The Montana Logger is very pleased to offer this restored German trade violin for a very reasonable buy-it-now price. We will also entertain reasonable offers for this refurbished antique German violin that dates from Circa 1920. PAYMENT: Payment is due within 3 days of purchase.
