Description: “Chief Brand” Mackintoshes ARE THE BEST. Advertising rack. Has 3 wire loop extensions, the two larger outside ones swing to and fro. This is an extremely rare piece. I know that this was made in Omaha, Nebraska, but there is only one other advertising piece in cyber-land for this brand (a pin back). The Chief Brand was made by the Inter-state Rubber Co. based in Omaha NB. On October 12, 1823, Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh sold the first raincoat. More about the Macintosh company appears at the end of this description. Hallmarks: None Approximate age: Assume circa 1900 Dimensions: Black portion 7” wide x 1.5” x 0.5” deep. Center loop extends depth by 3.25”. Side loops extend further out by 6” each. Condition: Very good collectible condition. Mentionable issue: paint losses from corrosion as clearly seen in photographs. Graphics are about 95% intact, and quite legible. Metal arms swing freely. No mounting hardware. Unpacked weight: 3.5 oz. Always happy to pass through discounts on combined shipping. I only charge actual postage, and always use recycled packing materials. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all possible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. I gladly accept returns, but please note I do not pay return postage unless there was a significant error in my description. The item listed is being sold as is, as pictured and as described to the best of my knowledge. All dimensions and weights approximate. If you have a question or an assumption on an item prior to purchase, please ask. I much prefer to take the time on the front end to make sure you will be satisfied with your purchase. Remember, when buying vintage expect imperfections as these items have a history and have been in the possession of others. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt. More about Macintoshes:Macintosh had been trying to find uses for the waste products of gasworks when he discovered that a substance called coal-tar naphtha dissolved India rubber — basically, bonding melted rubber to wool, which created a waterproof fabric. The first raincoats smelled bad, stiffened in cold weather, and gummed up in hot weather, but farmers, fishermen, and firemen loved them. They became so beloved in Great Britain that when referring to a raincoat, people simply asked for a “Mac” or a “Mack.” Z. T. Lindsay, was president, Inter-State Rubber O. L. Hyde, Inter-State Rubber Co. 1904 reference. Company's address was 1109-11 Harney St., Omaha Nebraska. From SEC document for Anaconda Mining referring to their $20K investment in the Inter-state Rubber Co.: “during the past year we have instated machinery to manufacture a full line of heavy rubber clothing in additional to our previous output of rubber boots and shoes. Our mackintosh, box and last factories have been equipped with electric power, and we have installed a new lighting system. Many other improvements have been made and all have been paid for. We have also been granted a patent on an important new process for making rubber boots and shoes that will withstand friction, chemicals and extremely variable temperatures. We are already buried with orders and it will be necessary to install at once a few more heaters, &c., to satisfy this demand."
