Description: Republic of Abkhazia Medal for Valor (aka Medal for Bravery.)GUARANTEED ORIGINAL medal from the early to mid-1990s, not a souvenir or recent issue.The medallion is in brass, measures approximately 36.0 mm wide. The suspension device is in brass and high quality “hot baked” enamel. The reverse of the suspension shows raised Cyrillic maker mark “P” of the Pobeda factory. This maker is of the early style which points out that the medal was manufactured no later than in the mid-90s. The medal is in great condition overall. The republic of Abkhazia was formally recognized only by Russia and a handful of other states in 2008, after the Russian invasion of Georgia. The republic however declared its independence from Georgia much earlier, in 1992, a manifestation of hostility between the local Abkhaz population and ethnic Georgians. There had been an ongoing armed conflict brewing there ever since, with Abkhazia receiving at least tacit support of Russian government vying for control of the Caucasian mountain passes and fertile coastal territory along the Black Sea. The Medal for Valor was established in 1992, one of the earliest awards of the republic. Note that the current version of this medal has five-sided suspension of the Russian style with a tri-color ribbon. The medal we offer is apparently the first version, with the square suspension in brass and enamel featuring green and white stripes of the national flag of Abkahzia.
