Description: Hard to find original 44 year-old complete issue of the New York Review of Books for 4 December 1980. A very good one with just a tad of wear to the top of the wrappers. Outstanding number includes: Clive James' longer and entertaining essay on the "Letters of Evelyn Waugh." It's called "Waugh's Last Stand." Thomas Sheehan on the "Collected Edition" of philosopher Martin Heidegger then being published in Germany. At this date there were only 8 volumes printed (of a projected 70) and Sheehan takes issue with the editorial acumen and strategies of the editors. This is an essay of some interest. It's called "Caveat Lector: The New Heidegger." Gore Vidal on "The Thinking Man's Novel." This on Mary McCarthy's "Ideas and the Novel," followed by a lively longer section on Marilyn Butler's new volume on the life and work of Thomas Love Peacock, "Peacock Displayed." Keith Thomas' essay following the publication of John Boswell's "Christianity, Social Tolerance and Homosexuality" (from the Christian Era to the 14th century). It's called "Rescuing Homosexual History." Robert Towers on the "Collected Stories of Eudora Welty." A new poem by Derek Walcott (1992 Nobel Laureate). A full page with an illustration. It's called "Hurucan." On the Hurricane God of the Maya. Joseph Frank on the great Russian novelist "Dostoevsky's Jewish Problem." An "Exchange" by numerous hands, including Denis Donoghue and artist and poet Dorothea Tanning, on the creeping virus of "Deconstruction" theory entering the literary world. The exchange was in response to an earlier essay on the topic by Donoghue. Numerous other essays, letters, reviews.
