Established in 1862, it has grown both by construction and by acquisition; its system now includes such railroads as the Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Rio Grande, Chicago & North Western, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas. Its system stretches from Chicago and New Orleans in the east to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle in the west. The UP was the dominant carrier of passengers between the US Midwest and the West Coast, and it actively promoted tourist travel to the various landmarks and attractions along its routes. For auction is a booklet, dated 1953, entitled "Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon National Parks". These parks, located in the same general region of southern Utah and Arizona, were accessible from UP trains. They are presented as some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the nation, if not the world. Separate sections discuss Zion ("cloud-seeking stone mountains"); Kaibab National Forest ("a vast plateau"); Grand Canyon ("a vast and intricate range of sunken mountains cut through a hundred miles of high plateau"); Bryce Canyon ("the flaming bowl"); Cedar Breaks ("a circle of painted cliffs"); the flowers of the area; and various accommodations available. There is a section advising on the best way to take motion pictures and photographs and the supplies needed, along with another section on clothing and personal items to pack for the train trip as well as the touring of these park areas. Several pages discuss life on the train and are illustrated. There is a 2-page fold-out map showing the proximity of these various attractions. This booklet measures appx 7 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches and contains 40 pages. It is printed on a sturdy, medium-weight cardstock. There are over 3 dozen pictures, many in color, plus other illustrations. The booklet appears to have had little if any use and is in excellent condition -- no rips, tears, spills or smears -- and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place. A fantastic collectible item for any UP railfan. Get images that make Supersized seem small.Showcase your items with Auctiva's Listing Templates! THE simple solution for eBay sellers.
