Additional Information This photograph of Nicholas II of Russia captures the Imperial family at a time of significant change within Russia before the October Revolution, which removed the ruling family from power following a series of political revolts spurred on by communist theories and the organization of rural farmers as well as workers in urban centers like Moscow and St. Petersburg. His reign as Czar was marked by his relative support of political and economic reforms. Ultimately, he abdicated his power in 1917, only four years after this evocative photograph was taken, which ended the Romanov dynasty, which had lasted longer than three hundred years. In 1981, Nicholas and his family were officially recognized as martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, their remains were given an elaborate state and church ceremony to honor them eighty years after their deaths. The ceremony took place in St. Petersburg, and his reputation as a callous tyrant was reframed by Russian historians who had previously been influenced by Soviet politics, which aimed to tarnish his reputation for the previous decades. This classic photograph is still revered and held in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The distinctive style and classic aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This is truly an authentic piece of Russian political and photographic history that illustrates the evolution and development of the nation over the past century.
