Description: While not nearly as famous as his brother Edward S. Curtis who chose to photograph Native Americans and their traditions, Asahel Curtis was just as talented behind the lens. They started out as a duo with Edward running a brick and mortar studio in Seattle when Asahel was sent to photograph the Alaskan gold rush in 1897. When he returned a few years later, he was the star and his brother Edward was jealous, publishing the Yukon photographs under his own name! A bitter dispute erupted between the brothers and they went their separate ways, Edward deciding to go on a similar expedition to photograph American Indians and this time Asahel staying put in Seattle focusing on local landscape and beauty. Here is a stamped example of Asahel's work capturing a pacific northwest lady picking berries and placing them in a bucket! A fantastic image that is from an underrated early naturalist photographer whose work is sure to appreciate in value in the future. This is one of the first images from Asahel Curtis we have ever handled and it is beautiful! Measures 7.5x9.5 Inv #57585
