Description: This is an antique Playtime Busywork Box for Children of Kindergarten Age. It was made by Stanton & Van Vliet, Publishers, of Chicago. It's Box No. 2 Paper Folding for Bird Lovers, and amazingly, the contents are still present - even the brass paper fasteners! The kit makes a framed picture of bird, a crumb tray and brush, 2 trays and a little box - the idea was to make the brush and crumb tray and brush and use it to gather crumbs and to make the trays and box to put the crumbs on the windowsill or tree branch for the birds. There's also a frame to make and pictures of birds on blue paper, and 2 sheets of transparent tracing paper. The birds were to be cut out, put with the transparent paper and inserted in the frame made from the cardboard, where they would be visible when held to a light. The instructions include a diagram and poem about birds. The inside of instructions have pictures of the other 5 busywork boxes available. The boxes were prepared by Bertha M. Rhodes, Principal of the Rogers Park Kindergarten in Chicago. I found references to her in Kindergarten organizations from the 1890's through the mid 1920's. Stanton & Van Vliet was a book publisher in business from 1917 til 1925. They reprinted some titles, so some of the copyrights in their books have dates earlier than 1917. The top of the box has some paper loss on the edges, and a stain and 2 tears on the side. The bottom has some tears, several repaired with tape. The contents are in good condition. Box measures 5 3/4 by 8 3/4 by 1 1/4 inches.
