Description: I have here for sale a RARE book entitled A BOY'S VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD Including a Residence in Victoria, and a Journey by Rail Across North America Edited by SAMUEL SMILES Eleventh Thousand With Illustrations published by John Murray, London, in 1880. In an attempt to speed up recovery from a lung illness the editor's son was advised to take a voyage to Melbourne on one of Money Wigram's ships in the winter of 1868-9. For 18 months he lived in the gold-mining district of Victoria. When he had recovered in 1871 he decided to make the return journey by the Pacific Route, via Honolulu and San Francisco, proceeding from there by rail across the Rocky Mountains to New York. He kept a journal of his travels, and they are here accompanied by several b/w illustrations, including 6 maps. Half bound burgundy leather on marbled hardboards. Scuffing to the boards. Five raised bands with a black title block, gilt lettering and gilt decoration on the spine. Marbled endpapers and page edges. Light foxing to prelims and flyleaf. Name of previous owner on the prelim. Blind stamp of Lupton Book shop on front free endpaper. All pages are tight and the book is in very good condition. xv, 304 pages. 18 x 12.5 cm.
