Description: early Brooklyn Bridge view - 1871! This is a rare single wood-engraved sheet only, which is over 150 years old! It was published as the front page of the Dec. 9, 1871, issue of The Illustrated Christian Weekly, an uncommon publication which was mostly religious in tone, but included some items of general interest. The print measures 11 x 16 inches in size, and is in excellent condition, with some light creasing along its centerlines (see photos). It presents a lovely, finely detailed, full-page engraving of FULTON FERRY AND BROOKLYN BRIDGE, drawn and engraved by Davis and Brightly. The scene depicts a bustling city street full of pedestrians, coaches, and horse-cars at the Fulton Ferry building, with the East River in the background, and the future Brooklyn Bridge looming over all the activity on land and water. At this time, construction on the Brooklyn Bridge had been underway for two years, but the enormous structure was not to be completed for more than a decade. So this was an artists conception of what the future held, but it is easily recognizable as what the Brooklyn Bridge was to ultimately look like. Elsewhere in the issue was a related article on the engraving. A photocopy of the article will be included. The text is headed Brooklyn Ferry and Bridge. It consists of 16 column inches of text in all, and begins: We give on our first page a view of the Fulton Ferry and the new bridge across the East river that is to connect Brooklyn with New York, as it will appear to a spectator on the Brooklyn side. Much of the rest of the article are about the growth of Brooklyn, and the Brooklyn Union Ferry Company, which . . . is now unequalled for the extent of its accommodations, the comfort, strength, and beauty of its boats, the facilities, rapidity, and safety of its travel, and the enormous amount of business hourly crowding its thoroughfares. Over forty million passengers are annually transported over its ferries . . . After a brief discussion of the details of the Bridge, the article concludes by saying: Our artist presents in his beautiful sketch, a view of the new and enlarged Fulton-ferry house, on the Brooklyn side, with a glimpse of the bridge swinging over the river between the massive towers of substantial masonry, as it will appear when the stupendous work is completed.
