Description: We are offering an 1842 Stampless Letter / Postal Cover with a hand-stamped Binghamton, NY postmark. **NOTE** - there is no postage stamp, as postage stamps were not issued until 1847; hand-stamped in the upper right corner is "PAID", indicating postage was pre-paid. The letter dated September 13, 1842, is to Azariah C. Flagg, Comptroller, Albany, NY from Mason Whiting. Whiting says he has enclosed an affidavit relating to the occupancy of Lot No. 134 - Chenango, Massachusetts, lying in Union, Broome County, from which 20 acres had been sold in the N.W. corner at the sale in 1839. "I trust the affidavit will be sufficient to authorize you to refund the sale." It sounds as if Flagg had sold acreage from a lot that he had already sold to the current occupants and had no right to sell off 20 acres of it to someone else. At the bottom there are some mathematical computations and the notation "Cancelled", we assume written by Flagg, dated about a week later, apparently canceling the sale. **NOTE** - As was common during this period, the letter also served as the envelope by folding it a certain way, addressing it, and sealing with a red wax seal. **CONDITION** - A piece of the paper had torn away at the spot where the seal was opened, as often happened.
